About
Michelle Yap is the founder of M Yap Law. She specializes in civil and criminal litigation, and had handled multi-million lawsuits at all levels of the Singapore Courts, as well as arbitrations at the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC).
Michelle has experience in both the public and private sectors. She started her legal career at one of Singapore's largest law firms, Allen & Gledhill. She later joined public service, where she served as a District Judge presiding over criminal trials.
She was also a State Counsel of the Attorney-General's Chambers providing legal advice to the Government, and the Assistant Commissioner in the Personal Data Protection Commission where she made enforcement decisions on data breach incidents. Michelle is currently practicing at M Yap Law, a law firm she founded in 2021.
Michelle graduated with First Class Honours in 2008, and was a recipient of several academic prizes, including the Weightsman Prize for being the top student in the Law of Tort in her cohort. Upon graduation from law school, Michelle served as a Justices’ Law Clerk to the Chief Justice and High Court Judges of the Supreme Court. Trained in mediation, Michelle has successfully negotiated settlements relating to criminal complaints, employment disputes, and contractual claims.

Current Appointments and Pro-Bono Work
Michelle has been recommended by the Presiding Judges of the State Courts and the Family Courts and Youth Courts to serve on the Selection Panel for Singapore Law Reports. She will hold that appointment from 1 October 2022 to 31 March 2025.
Michelle acts on a pro bono basis for the Law Society ProBono Services (Criminal Legal Aid Scheme).
